Why this makes me happy?
So what’s going on in this picture?
Two rubber gloves, one inside out.
And why does it make me feel happy?! 🙂
I started saving the leftover rubber glove. You know that feeling when you are doing the dishes and you realise one glove has given up and you have a leak?
I used to throw out the pair and get a new pair.
But that felt wasteful and wrong, so I started saving the glove without a hole. Thinking that I would have a balance of leftover gloves with time and be able to make new pairs.
After about 18 months of this I realised I had a drawer full of left-hand rubber gloves and not a single right-hand one. I’m right handed and my husband is left handed, we are pretty equal in our dishwashing efforts, so we can’t explain this phenomenon… but we had a problem!
I had a drawer full of left-hand rubber gloves...we had a problem!
We spent some time doggedly trying to do the dishes wearing two left hand gloves. Trying to use up the backlog. But this didn't really work. It was uncomfortable, unsatisfactory and likely to lead to some breakages.
I tried googling if I could buy some single right-hand only rubber gloves. Surely this was a thing and there were other people out there with my problem? No luck.
My entrepreneurial brain was off at a gallop 🐎… planning my next business of selling single hand rubber gloves only. Thinking of the impact I could have! All the waste I was imagining up and down the country of unwanted single rubber gloves!
My next genius idea was an online swap scheme for people. Perhaps an app - matching up the ones in need of left gloves with the ones in need of right ones. Harmonious rubber glove based relationships breaking out all over the place. A whole un-talked about issue, previously hidden in drawers and forgotten, now out in the open… oh, the entrepreneurial brain!
Then I did some more research and came across the perfect solution.
The kind of solution that feels so obvious and you wonder why it took you the best part of two years to get to it…
Turn one of your spare left hand gloves inside out.
✨Tada! You have a right hand glove! ✨
Oh so simple and so easy.
Now each time I do the dishes with my inside out right hand (previously left hand) glove, I feel happy.
But why?!
Why does this simple thing make me happy? Because at a core values level I’m getting a whole bunch of big ticks. It is creative, simple, effective, efficient in so many ways, impactful, a little silly, it has integrity, reduces waste and pleases my entrepreneurial and innovative brain.
As I write this story I already have a sense of who in my life will be interested in me talking about leftover rubber gloves and who won’t. It’s about their core values and what is important to them. They will probably like the story if they care about creativity, innovation, impact, integrity and efficiency.
And if this story makes you a little happy too, that is a really good indicator that we are likely a good match at a values level to do some work together.
